On Wednesday the 6th of November, DIT Karting Club competed in the first round of the SSI Karting Championship Intervarsities on the famous Nutts Corner circuit, Co. Antrim. The club were competing against the best drivers their rival colleges could offer, producing fierce competition on the day which was amplified by a very slippery track.
Last year DIT produced a very good result in Nutts Corner as we took first, second and fourth place, which was continued this year with 7 drivers in the top 16. The DIT teams were consistent throughout the day, however they were unfortunate in the semi-finals with two drivers just missing out on the top 8 spots for the final.
After a very tight final race, Peter Campbell secured 4th and Graham Higginbotham claimed 7th place, leaving DIT’s A team only 1 point behind the leaders, meaning that they are well within grasp of pole position after the next round, which is on Wednesday the 27th in Watergrasshill, Co. Cork.
In preparation for the next intervarsity, DIT Karting Club held their first team endurance race of the year last Thursday the 14th in Kart-City in Santry. 40 drivers attended, hoping to qualify for their chance to compete for DIT in Cork and beyond, which led to an interesting evening’s racing with lots of new faces showing up. There were ten teams of 4 drivers with an even mix of beginners and experienced drivers, meaning strategy was a big factor on the night. The race was a great opportunity for the club to spot new talent to represent the college in upcoming intervarsity rounds through the year.
